The Thumb

The Thumb in palmistry, deal with a person's will power and ability to adapt to change. In relation to the fingers, the thumb is normally higher than the bottom joining of the first (index) finger.

The most common thumb stretches up to around the middle of the first joint of the first (index) finger. It should be nice and firm, but at the same time moderately flexible. When the hand is spread, the thumb should be a fair distance from the rest of the fingers. It has a rounded tip which tapers and slims down in the middle. This type of thumb represents someone who has a balanced will, a logical mind, and love nature.

  • The angle made between the thumb and the first (index) finger is known as the "Angle of generosity." The farther back you can bend the thumb, the more generous the person is. A stiff thumb that sticks to the side of the palm shows great cautiousness and conservative nature with money.
  • The farther back the top portion of the thumb is bent, the more easy-going the person is. If it is fairly rigid, than the person has a stiff nature.
  • The mobility of the thumb represents the person's willingness to adapt to change, too much flexibility and the person may be a pushover.
  • If the length of a person's thumb reaches up to the middle joint of the first (index) finger, then they are strong minded and strong willed. If it barely makes it to the first joint, then the person shows poor mental development.
  • An upper joint that is small when compared to the bottom section, indicates a weak will.
  • If the top section is longer than the middle section, the person's will dominates their intellect
  • If the middle section is long compared to the top section, then the person tends to have large ideas, but may not have the discipline to carry them out.

The Shape of the Fingers

Earlier we looked at the shape of the palm. The shape of the fingers is also important. The shape of the fingers dose not always match to the shape of the hand, and sometimes you will find multiple finger shapes on a single hand. A mixture creates a person with diverse qualities and talents.

The shape of the fingernail is also considered when trying to determine the shape of finger. Pointed-shaped fingers often have almond shaped nails; cone-shaped fingers have oval nails; square fingers have square nails; spade-shaped fingers have square-based nails that broaden at the tip.

  • A square finger represents a down-to-earth nature.
  • A pointed finger shows an artistic nature.
  • The spade-shaped finger signifies ingenuity.
  • The cone-shaped finger represents an imaginative quality.
  • Straight fingers represent a person who is honest, direct and clear-headed.
  • Crooked fingers show a devious and malicious quality.
  • If the fingers are mixed, then the palmist must consider the nature of each finger. For example, if a person had a square third (ring) finger, they could be artistically inclined, however if they also had a pointed first (index) finger, then their chosen occupation would probably not be art related.

The Length of the Fingers

The length of the finger is relative to the size of the palm. It is hard to judge the length by sight so it is best to use a ruler to take exact measurements. Fingers that are considered long are about seven-eighths the size of your palm. Short fingers are considered short if they are seven-eighths of the palm.

The thumb normally reaches the bottom joint of the first finger.
The first finger reaches a third of the way up the nail of the second finger.
The third finger normally reaches just above the nail of the second finger.
The forth finger normally reaches the top joint of the third finger.

The length and size of a person's fingers can indicate whether they are an intellectual, emotional or physical person. Heavy fingers show a more physical nature. Long and slim signifies more of an emotional and aggressive person. Short, thick fingers shows that the person is emotionally balanced.

  • If your first (index) finger is longer than the average length, you tend to be a leader and tell others what to do. If it is shorter however, then you tend to sit back and let others control you.
  • If your third (ring) finger is longer than the average height, you may tend to have an artistic talent, as well as a reckless and wild nature.
  • If your fourth (little) finger is longer than the average height, then you tend to be very articulate, and good at writing and selling. If it is shorter than the normal length, it shows that you lack the ability to influence others.

  • If your first (index) and third (ring) fingers are the same length, then you are living in a balanced way in daily life. You share your ideas and listen to the ideas of others with equal interest. You are confident and feel best when all things physical and mental are equally balanced.
  • If your first (index) finger is longer than your third (ring) finger this indicates that you were born with a natural gift for leadership. You have a talent for directing others and getting results.
  • If your third (ring) finger is longer than your first (index) finger it indicates that you have a lot of creativity. The longer and wider the third (ring) finger is, compared to the first (index) finger, the stronger your creativity. You like to do things so you can see the results of your creative efforts. You are good at seeing new and unique ways of doing things.

The Fingernails

Among other things, your fingernails reveal information about your health and ability to deal with stress. How you care for your nails (Are you a decorator or nail-biter?) can also reveal something of your personality.

  • Brittle: Your Health has been weakened to the point where the body has begun systematically shutting down.
  • Fluted: The pattern of denial has become a habit, and life has turned into a constant series of aggravations and traumas. If you are not careful, a severe illnesses or accidents will soon happen.
  • Turned Back: A result of illnesses caused by stress and worry. At this stage, spinal weakness becomes a problem.
